Over 3 months ago I wrote a post about the Science 140 project. This crowdsourcing social media project aimed to collect ideas, definitions and thoughts about science in 140 characters or less using #Science140. It has been a hectic few months but all the hard work is paying off… I’ve got some exciting news to share!
We finished collating #Science140 tweets on 29 June. The response was phenomenal with thousands of tweets (over 60,000 words worth!) written by hundreds of contributors. My wonderful fellow team members, Aoibhinn Ni Shuilleabhain, Humphrey Jones, Paul O’Dwyer and I spent many hours intensely reading tweet after tweet trying to pick the best for the book. This was a difficult job considering the high quality of the submissions we received.
The topics covered by #Science140 are often hard to communicate effectively so I expected it would be difficult to condense them into 140 characters. When reading through the tweets, I was pleasantly surprised at how well everyone rose to the challenge.
Time for the exciting news… I’ve written a post on Science140.blogspot.ie this morning announcing that we have secured a book deal and submitted the first draft. Inspired by #Science140 tweets, the title of the book is A Neutron Walks Into A Bar. All proceeds of the book are going to research into cystic fibrosis through the Cystic Fibrosis Association of Ireland.
A Neutron Walks Into A Bar will be published this October!! You can keep you up-to-date with news via Science140.blogspot.ie and @Science140.
