I’m not a fan of clichés but this week one in particular is true so please forgive me in advance: good news comes in threes!
After a tough bank holiday weekend of non-stop college work, my first piece of news arrived on Tuesday morning when I found out I was shortlisted for two Smedias awards. The national student media awards has been running since 2000 and takes place on 17 April. I’ve made the cut for the ‘Journalist of the Year – National Press’ and ‘Blog of the Year’ categories.
Discovering this an hour before my interview for the Sunday Times was a confidence boost and may have helped with my second exciting announcement. I’m delighted to share that I’ll be working in the Sunday Times (Irish edition) for the summer, starting in July. It’s an amazing opportunity and I hope to add lots of science and medical stories to the news pages.
Finally, on the way home from college last night I popped into the DCU Hybrid Student Media Awards which were taking place in the Helix. ‘Blog of the Year’ was judged by music blogger, Nialler9. *cue drum roll* He awarded the prize to Science Calling for its in-depth coverage of its chosen topic and quality of content (as far my excited brain can remember). Yaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyy!
Unfortunately, due to the insane amount of college work I need to do, celebrations must be postponed until mid-May but this hasn’t stopped me dancing around the house.
The past few months have been the most stressful and work-filled time that I can remember. Despite this, I’m enjoying my venture in full-time journalism enormously. I don’t think it will be much different going forward (if my lecturers are giving us the right impression of the media industry) but it’s my dream and I’m loving (almost) every minute of it!
Thanks to everyone who has been part of Science Calling as without you I’m almost certain it would have been an ordinary week. So many people have supported me in this journey since the beginning and I’ve met amazing science journalists, bloggers, communicators and enthusiasts along the way. Special thanks to all the contributors over the past few months who can share in this blog award celebration.
